A Miracle!

I plan on giving an "update post" soon...life has been crazy busy lately but I just have to share this miracle with you all. So many of you know that Triston has not been the best sleeper throughout his life. Yes, he would sleep through the night for a few nights but then something would happen and he would get off his schedule and not be able to sleep for several nights. Ever since our vacation at Christmas Triston has been waking up at least 4 or 5 times a night (and those were GOOD nights). Right after the New Year I found out that he was just overcoming an ear infection (I had NO IDEA!!! Bless his heart.), pink eye, and a cough. Quinn and I thought that he for sure would start sleeping again once he was feeling better...not so. So after about 3 more weeks of sleepless nights I became super desperate. When an independent little two year old and an almost seven month prego mommy are not sleeping, it's not a good combo! So I decided Triston must still be sick so I took him back to the doctor praying that this would solve the problem. The doctor checked him out thoroughly, I think he could tell I was about to be a basket case, and reluctantly told me Triston is as healthy as could be. NO!!!!! I broke down right there in the doctor's office. I started crying and begging for Infant Ambien!! That's right I wanted to put my 2 year old on sleeping pills. I just couldn't stop thinking about how in two months I am going to have another little one and will be getting up all night with that one too. It totally overwhelmed me and I was totally desperate. My doctor told me he would send Triston to a sleep specialist but I had to read this book, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, first. I was annoyed (since I have read about 6 books on helping children to sleep and I have had no success) but I decided to do it so I could get my appt with the specialist asap. Keep in mind, Quinn and I really have tried everything, letting Triston cry for 3 hours straight several night in a row, no binkies, bottles or special blankies, we don't sleep with him or put him in our bed, so I was sure this book would offer nothing new to me. So I read the first chapter and then (as instructed by my doctor) read the "two year old" section. It seemed easy enough, it did offer a new idea to help with our "jack in the box" as they called kids that get out of there beds a million times at night. So we tried this new technique when putting Triston to bed, it is called the "silent return to sleep" method. Quinn put Triston in his bed about 5 times before he fell asleep, and to our utter astonishment he slept 12 HOURS SOLID!!! We thought for sure it was a fluke. Next night, same thing, we put him back in his bed a few times at bedtime...and then another night of sleeping 12 hours! Not to mention he is back to taking a TWO HOUR afternoon nap. Since our first night with this new method, Triston has slept 11 or 12 hours every night without waking up. It really is a miracle, all 3 of us wake up so happy and our days have been SOOOO much more enjoyable!!! I owe my life to the author of the book!!!!

I don't understand. do you mean after he would come out of this room you would just return him to his bed?

Yes but we return him to his room without talking to him or even making eye contact. We just go in there showing no emotion, the book calls it "mechanically", and just put him back in his bed over and over until he goes to sleep. I can't believe it worked!! In the book, it showed a case study of a couple that tried it. The first night the put their daughter back in bed 69 times, second night 145 times, third night 0! At least we didn't have it that bad!!

Oh that's good! I saw that on Super Nanny awhile ago and like you said, it would take a ton of times the first time, then less and less the next. It's funny how something so simple works amazing and I'm SO happy for you that you can get a good night's rest now before your little one gets here!! Everyone is always happier with a good nights rest!

That is too funny and such a relief. I would like to know who comes up with this stuff I can remembering ignoring my kids after several trips to bed but it was because I was sick of dealing with them and so mad and tired that I would snap if I opened my mouth. Who knew i was doing the silent return to bed method, I thought it was the mad, tired mom method. Glad you all are getting more sleep you better catch up quick you only have two month till the fun starts all over again.

Dani-
I told my husband that I saw your blog through several other blogs, and He said "you better write them and say hi for me, and stay caught up on their lives, I miss them." As you can tell.. He doesn't blog, or even know how. :) As a matter of fact, i don't even know if we have officially met so this might sound a little crazy to you, sorryou about that. . . but I became buddies with quinn. Anyway I hope things are going well. I hope you don't mind if we add you to our blog. :)

Super Dani instead of Super Nanny!!! I can see that working getting him to bed but I'm so surprised he stays asleep since that seemed to be the problem. Funny how they would be connected.

Oh Dani did I not tell you about this book?? I am so sorry. It's my bible. I read it when Kennedy was 8 months old and it saved my life! Also, if you have time you should keep reading about newborns to help you with your little girl. Thanks to this book Cameron is sleeping at least 10 hours straight at night now (and that's without any crying). If I could stand up and bare my testimony in church about this book I would. I want all the moms to know about it! I'm so glad you are both getting your sleep!

I swear by this book! I read it when I was in the hospital right after Avery was born and she has slept 12 -14 hours a night since she was 6 weeks! I tell everyone I know to read it but no one ever believes me. Every once in a while I run into someone else who has read it and it has worked for every single person I have talked to. I love that Dr!

I so know the story of a non-sleeper. It is totally a miracle to have them sleep through the night. Chase still doesn't on a regular basis. . .but Callie does great. And it is amazing!

Hey is Quinn still looking into business school? If he has any questions about Utah State we have really liked the extension program. Hope all is well.
